Summary: Zack goes home.

Author’s notes: Sorry I’ve been invisible; I’ve been finishing a novel.  



It didn’t hurt anymore. All the pain, the fear, the worry… it was all slowly fading away. The rain was not even cold; just a soft distant touch. Zack swallowed, but couldn’t taste the blood in his throat. He blinked, the drops of rain forming the tears he could not shed, feeling them running down his cheeks.

He was okay. The pain was gone. Now he just felt pleasantly sleepy, and the gunfire was only meaningless noise.

He watched the shade materialize from beyond the grey mist that seemed to have enveloped him. It came closer, darkening, taking shape, the long hair and black leather coat skirts swaying, the flat soled boots silent on the wet and bloody earth. The form knelt beside him, and Zack felt someone take his hand.

“Come on, Puppy. Time to come home.”

Zack blinked and swallowed again, turning his head to look into green feline eyes. He smiled weakly. “I know you.”

There was a soft, brief, laugh. “I should think you do. Take my hand. It’s time to leave.”

Slowly, carefully, Zack stood up, feeling weak and sleepy, but otherwise fine. “How far is home?”

“Not far. Did you want to share it with me?”

“Yeah,” said Zack. “I do. But…what about Cloud?”

“He’ll be fine, Puppy. We’ll watch over him. Don’t worry about him. Are you all right?”

“I am now,” said Zack. “I am sorry I’m not taller, though.”

“And why is that?”

The voice was soft, amused, affectionate. Already Zack had forgotten the pain and darkness of his life. He stepped onto a stone so he could gaze into the green eyes.

“Well I just don’t think it’s dignified to have to stand on something to kiss my commanding officer.”

In life, Sephiroth might not have accepted the kiss. He may have been restrained by culture and social norms. But such things were far away now, and he accepted the kiss with willingness and warmth. They held the kiss for a long moment, then reluctantly released each other.

“Time to go home, Zack,” whispered Sephiroth.

“Okay,” said Zack. He stepped off the stone, then looked back to a small blonde form on the ground. “You’re sure he’ll be okay?”

“He’ll be fine,” said Sephiroth. “He has us. We will look after him. We won’t let him be hurt by some ridiculous Jenova-clone of myself.”

“And Aeris? Will she be okay too?”

“She has Tseng.”

“Yeah. I guess.” Zack took Sephiroth’s arm. “Okay. I’m ready to go. Where’s home?”

“Not far. Just over this hill.”

“Are Angeal and Genesis there too?”

“Yes, Zack.”

“But they know you’re all mine, right? That I love you? Because I waited a really long time for a chance to kiss you.”

Sephiroth laughed quietly. “They know.”

“Okay.”

Zack released a long exhalation of breath, and closed his eyes. Overwhelming peace enveloped him, and he felt soft lips touch his own. It was time to leave.

“Let’s go home,” said Zack.
